Prop Firm Evaluations, Explained for Beginners

Prop firm evaluations let you trade a funded account without $25,000 of your own in a brokerage. That is why they have become the on-ramp for creators with discipline and screen time. Here is how the mechanics work.

Prop firm evaluations and funded trading accounts

The basics

What a Prop Firm Is

A proprietary trading firm gives you access to its capital, not yours. In exchange, it keeps a share of the profits you generate. Before it hands over funded capital, it needs proof you can trade without blowing the account up. That proof is the evaluation.

Step by step

How Prop Firm Evaluations Work

  1. Pay the evaluation fee

The fee buys access to a simulated account at a set size, commonly $25K, $50K or $100K.

  2. Hit the profit target

Often around 6–10% of the account size. Some firms also set a minimum number of trading days.

  3. Stay inside the drawdown rules

Every firm sets a maximum daily loss and a maximum overall loss. Breach either and the evaluation ends.

  4. Get funded

Pass and you trade the firm’s capital, often keeping a large share of the profits on a set payout schedule. Terms vary by firm.

Why it fits

Why Prop Firm Evaluations Fit an Actor’s Schedule

Trade around bookings

Most funded-account rules only require some trading days, so you can skip set days and come back next week.

Boring passes

Treat it like a job interview: slow, consistent and boring. Oversizing to hit the target fast is how most people fail.

Size small first

Start with micro contracts. Read E-mini vs. micro futures before your first attempt.
